The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was set up as the National Open School in 1989 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, as an autonomous organization. It provides educational opportunities to persons like you who wish to study further and qualify for a better tomorrow. The Mission of NIOS is to provide education to all with special concern for girl and women, rural youth, working men and women, SCs and STs, differently abled persons and other disadvantaged persons who because of or other reason could not continue their education in the formal system of education. NIOS has taken special initiatives for importing their education to Jail Inmates by setting up Study Centres in Jails all over India and granting them full fee exemption. NIOS operates through a network of Twenty Regional Centres, One Sub-Regional Centre, One Sub-Regional Cell and more than five thousand five hundred Accredited Institutions (AIs) and Accredited Vocational Institutions (AVIs) popularitly Known as Study Centres in India.

Features and Flexibilities in NIOS

♦ Age Limit:
There is no upper age Limit for admission. However, the minimum age for enro    lment is 14 years for the Secondary course and 15 years for the Senior Secondary course .
♦ Choice in Medium of Instructions:

  • Hindi, English, Urdu, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Odia Mediums at the Secondary stage.
  • Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali and Odia Mediums at the Senior Secondary stage.

♦Choice of Subjects:
You can choose anysubject combination from the list of subjects offered as per the criteria given in the Table.

 Supporting Documents i)Attested copy of Birth Certificate issued by the Municipal Authority or District office of the Registrar of Birth and Deaths for those born on or after 26.01.1989.OR


(ii) Transfer Certificate/School Leaving Certificate showing applicant’s date of birth, issued by the last school attended by the applicant. In case of Govt. school, the transfer certificate should be signed by the Principal while in the case of Private schools, it should also be countersigned by the competent education authority of State/ or District Education Officer.

Attested copy of the Certificate of Matriculation/Secondary Examination having a record of the Date of Birth. (No other proof of age will be accepted for Sr. Secondary admission)

(i) In case of Orphan/ Juvenile/Street Children, the Medical Legal Certificate may be provided as proof of   Date of Birth.

(ii) Date of birth once given in the Admission Form is generally not changed. Please check and state the correct date of birth in Admission Form.

  1. b) Minimum Education

Copy of the Certificate of the Secondary Examination passed from a recognized Board of Secondary Education, duty attested by a GazettedOfficar
  1. c) Proof Of Residence

Proof of residential address is essential for all. Attach a copy of any one of the following.

Ration Card, or Adhar Card, or appointment letter from the Employer on letter head, or water/telephone/electricity bill/statement of running bank account or income tax assessment order/Election Commissions Vote Identity Card, Parents Passport in case of minor.

Pass Criteria

For April-May Examination: Pass Criteria in a Subject Certification Criteria
Secondary Course (Class X) A minimum of 33% marks in the aggregate (Theory plus practical wherever applicable) in the public examination. The marks obtained in Internal Assessment will be shown separately in the marksheet. Pass in 5 subjects including at least one but not more than two languages.
Senior Secondary Course (class XII) A minimum of 33%marks in the aggregate as well as separately in theory and practicals in the public examination. The mark obtained in Internal Assessment will be shown separately in the marksheet. Pass in 5 subject including at least one but not more than two languages.
